The Sycamore of the Sot de l'Estany

Thirty metres of tree on a trunk 1.38 metres round. That is the shape of something that spent its whole life climbing towards a patch of sky, and it is why this sycamore is the odd one out among Barcelona's four monumental trees. Acer pseudoplatanus is the workhorse maple of northern and central Europe, the tree that lines streets in Vienna and colonises every gap in Britain. In Barcelona it barely holds on. The summers are too long and too dry, and it is rare enough here that the Catalan government named this one monumental on 2 April 2025 partly for being ordinary somewhere else. It lives in the Sot de l'Estany, a quarry pit inside the historic botanical garden that keeps cool air the way a cellar does, several degrees below the hillside above it. That is the whole explanation. Take a northern tree, drop it into the one cold damp hole on a Mediterranean mountain, and it grows to a height it would be pleased with in Bavaria, on a trunk that stayed slender because there was never any reason to spread sideways. Nobody recorded when it went in.
