The Nordmann Firs of Antonius Kerkhof

The world's most popular Christmas tree does not usually get old enough to become a monument. Nordmann fir is grown by the millions and cut down each December long before it can reach any real age, so a stand of three growing undisturbed in the Antonius kerkhof for roughly a century is exactly the kind of anomaly a tree register exists to flag. Planted in the 1920s in this small Catholic churchyard, once the burial ground of a parish nicknamed the Steentjeskerk before it merged back into the older Trudo parish in 1977, the three firs stand together as one dark, upright stand rather than as separate trees to find one by one. Nobody appears to have written about them beyond the register that designates them, which is unsurprising: a conifer doing exactly what a conifer does, only for a hundred years instead of one winter, is a quiet kind of remarkable. They stand a few dozen metres from the churchyard's box elder and its oak by the gate, close enough to see all three on one short visit. The churchyard opens daily, ten to five, free, no ticket, evergreen whatever the season.
