The Himalayan Cedar of Via Nino Bixio

This cedar rises over Viale Nino Bixio, a tree-lined avenue running through Borgo Trento from the city hospital toward Ponte Garibaldi, and it is one of only three trees standing anywhere within Verona city limits that Italy's national monumental-tree register has formally recognised. Its official measurements, a trunk 309cm around and a crown reaching 28 metres, earned it inclusion specifically for landscape value rather than for a documented age or historical association, the register's own more modest criterion compared to the age-and-dimension reasoning applied to its counterparts in Piazza Indipendenza. Cedrus deodara is native to the western Himalayas, where it grows at altitudes up to 3,000 metres in conditions nothing like Borgo Trento's flat, urban riverside setting, and its presence on a residential Verona boulevard reflects the same 19th and early 20th century fashion for grand, fast-growing conifers that filled institutional and civic gardens across Italy in the same period. No individual planting date is recorded, so its age here is presented as a broad, mature estimate rather than a precise figure.
