The Second-Ranked Black Walnut of Swallow Cliff Woods

No crown on our Chicago page spreads wider than this walnut's, and the county ranks it only second. The Forest Preserves of Cook County measured it on 7 December 2023: 102 feet of crown in both directions, about 31 metres, a perfect circle on paper. The tree is 36.6 metres tall, 120 feet, on a trunk 3.29 metres round. Somewhere else on preserve land stands a black walnut the register places ahead of it. No black walnut with a recorded height anywhere on our map is taller. The walnuts of Nolenspark in Maastricht come closest at 34 metres. London's Marble Hill walnut is far thicker, 5.78 metres round, but stops at 27. Swallow Cliff Woods is the heart of the best walk in the south of this page. About 530 metres away stands the county's champion shagbark hickory, and the second-ranked white oak at McClaughrey Springs Woods, the thickest white oak on our Chicago map, is about 560 metres off. Three ranked trees, none more than about 600 metres from the others. The pin is the register's GPS fix at the tree. We have not found which trail passes closest. The register is the only source for this walnut. It records size, rank and the day of measurement, and gives no age. Nobody has dated it. If you know how old it is, tell us.
