The Ash of the Sot de l'Estany

Three of the four trees the Catalan government calls monumental in Barcelona are foreign rarities. This one is a narrow-leaved ash, a tree that grows along half the rivers in Spain, and it beat all of them for height. At 29 metres it is the tallest of its species measured anywhere in Catalonia according to the government's own file, and it got there by growing in a hole. The Sot de l'Estany is an abandoned quarry pit inside the historic botanical garden, cut into the flank of Montjuic, and its walls hold cool damp air well enough to sit up to four degrees below the temperature outside. Anything planted at the bottom behaves as though it were somewhere much wetter and a long way north. This ash took that microclimate and went straight up, ending with a 2.5 metre trunk under a crown only 15 metres across, the proportions of a forest tree rather than a park one. The Generalitat declared it monumental on 2 April 2025 along with three neighbours, all four standing within about thirty metres of each other at the bottom of the same pit. Nobody wrote down when it was planted, and nobody has counted its rings.
