The Tipu Tree of the Parque de los Príncipes

At 32 metres this tipu tree is taller than almost anything else planted for its flowers in Seville, a South American species from Bolivia and Argentina that has become one of the most widely planted ornamental trees across southern Spain for the show it puts on in early summer: loose sprays of yellow-orange pea flowers covering the whole crown, followed by a carpet of fallen petals thick enough to colour the pavement underneath. Seville's 2022 survey found it in optimal physiological condition with normal structure and no plant health problems, girth 3.24 metres at chest height widening to 4.80 at the base. It grows in the Parque de los Príncipes, a park in the Los Remedios district on the west bank of the Guadalquivir, standing without another catalogued singular tree nearby, an isolated specimen rather than part of a cluster. Tipuana tipu was introduced to Spain in the nineteenth century and took to the country's hot, dry summers well enough that it now self-seeds in some regions, an immigrant tree that has made itself entirely at home.
