Keep the trees you have stood in front of

Collecting is the game of Ancient Trees: stand in front of a tree like this one, tick it off, and your collection of old giants grows city by city. It lives in the Ancient Trees app, along with walking routes past several trees.

Parco Sempione is the most walked park in Milan, and this tree only entered the national register of monumental trees in November 2025. It stands on Viale Cervantes at 33 metres, on a trunk 3.9 metres around, one of 48 Lombard trees designated in a single announcement that took the region past 476 protected specimens. Its age is not on record. Italy's register lists girth and height and leaves the years blank, and no local survey has ever dated this one, so the two numbers on the tape are the only figures that describe it honestly: 390 centimetres around, 33 metres up. Everything past that is inference from size, and inference is the right word for it. Where it stands is more interesting than what it measures. Viale Cervantes runs through the park between the Castello Sforzesco at one end and the Arco della Pace at the other, which makes it a route rather than a destination, and almost everyone on it is going somewhere else. The same avenue carries the Caucasian Wingnut that bends out low over the park's pond, close enough that the two are a single short walk. Between them they make this stretch the part of Sempione worth slowing down for, which is not how most people use it. It is 33 metres of reason to stop.
