The Champion Eastern White Pine of Busse Forest North
United StatesChicagoBusse Forest North
At 29.3 metres, this is the tallest conifer on our Chicago map, and the biggest eastern white pine the Forest Preserves of Cook County have found on their land. They measured it on 11 August 2023: 96 feet tall, a trunk 2.63 metres round, 104 inches, and a crown about 15.8 metres one way and 10.4 the other. Set it beside the state champion red pine at Indian Boundary, also on this page, and the white pine is almost ten metres taller and more than half a metre thicker round. The same species grows in Europe as the Weymouth pine. Our Graz page lists the Eggenberg Weymouth Pine at 3.70 metres round, a metre thicker than this one, though with no height to compare. Busse Forest North sits just above Busse Forest South, and between them they hold five of the trees on this page. The county's second-ranked sugar maple stands about 2.2 kilometres to the south; the champion Ohio buckeye and the champion and third-ranked basswoods are all within about three kilometres. In winter, when the others stand bare, this is the one still in needles. The pin is the register's GPS fix at the trunk. We have found no trail description that leads to it. The register is the only source and gives no age. Nobody has dated this pine. If you know how old it is, tell us.
