Home › Collections › The Oldest Trees We Have Mapped The Oldest Trees We Have Mapped Four hundred years is a useful threshold. Older than that and a tree predates nearly everything around it: the streets, the houses, usually the city's entire modern shape. This page ranks every tree we have mapped that clears it, oldest first, and it re-ranks itself the moment we add an older one. One rule keeps it honest, and it costs us entries: a tree qualifies on the LOW end of its estimate, so a tree recorded as one hundred to five hundred years old is not here, however tempting the upper number looks. Where the age is a range, the range is what you see, because that is what the sources say. Start at the top with olives that were already ancient when Rome was a village, and work down to oaks that were merely standing when the printing press arrived.

Norway Spruce (Picea abies) · root system approximately 9,550 years old; the visible trunk is only a few centuries old · Fulufjället mountain plateau, reached via the Njupeskär trail
Top of this list on a technicality worth knowing about. The 9,550 years belong to the root system, carbon dated, which has kept cloning itself since not long after the ice left Dalarna. The spruce standing above it is a few hundred years old at most. Every other tree here is one organism of that age above ground.
