Ancient trees in Austria

Vienna keeps a tree register detailed enough to argue with itself. This page maps 45 remarkable trees across 3 cities in Austria, each one researched and verified. The oldest of them is The Cemetery Plane of Singerstraße in Vienna, at 290 years.

The oldest plane in front of the City Hall is dated 1783 by tradition and 1876 in the city's own records, ninety years apart with no way from here to settle it. The pagoda tree in the Stadtpark is on file as planted in 1860, in a park that did not open until August 1862. The friction is worth it: the register holds nearly nine hundred trees in the eighth district alone, which is why a girth or a planting year exists here where most cities have neither. Vienna also has one of the strangest trees on this site, a ginkgo at Schönbrunn carrying a grafted female branch, so a single tree is both sexes at once. Twenty-five trees, all in one city so far.
