Vienna's own records cannot agree what this tree is.
Poplar
Populus sp.
Poplars grow fast and die young, which is exactly why the old ones here stand out: each has outlasted the ordinary run for the genus by decades. We map 4 of them, in 4 cities.
None of them is famous for its age. Ofunato's Dokonjo Poplar took the 2011 tsunami half underwater and kept standing, and the city built a memorial plaza around it. Biei's Ken and Mary Tree was just a farm boundary marker until a 1972 car commercial made it one of the most photographed trees in Hokkaido. Arnhem's Wagnerlaan Poplar has an official monument listing and nothing else, not even a settled species, and Warsaw's in Park Wielkopolski got a two-line designation in 2019 that does not say which poplar it is either. The sources cannot say which poplar any of them is, only that each is a Populus. If you know one on sight, tell us.
