Portland's grows out of a street planter a florist put in before the street existed, in the 1870s or 80s, and has since reached 31 metres. Vienna's stands in a small park named for the writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, protected as a natural monument since 1942 with no age ever recorded, an unusually thin file for a tree the city thought worth the paperwork. None of the three needed anything resembling good soil to get old.
