European Ash
Ash is the tree Europe is losing right now. This page maps every european ash on the site, 17 so far across 12 cities.
A fungus from east Asia, harmless to the ashes it evolved alongside, arrived in Poland and has since worked its way west across the continent, which puts a different weight on the four mapped here. The tallest is in Prague, a 37 metre trunk in the one corner of Strahov Monastery the monks left open to the public, protected since 2007 and among the most massive ashes recorded in the Czech Republic. Gdansk's is older than the rifle factory built around it, roughly 280 years against the works that once turned out 2,500 guns a day. Edinburgh's stands in a park whose house is a roofless shell. Munich's carries no age, no size and no history in the city ordinance, only three words: extremely wide-spreading crown.
Prague
Krakow
European ash is one of the commonest trees in Poland and a thick one is not common at all.
Plac Kossaka today is better known for parked cars and a kebab stand than for its trees, which is what makes the ash at number 4 easy to miss.
Krakow protects three European ashes, and this is the only one that does not grow out of a pavement.
Edinburgh
One of the oldest ash trees in Edinburgh grows in a park with no house left standing in it.
Munich
Munich's ordinance gives three words for why this tree is protected: extrem ausladende Krone, an extremely wide-spreading crown.

This European ash shares the Jardin d'Isabelle with the copper beech the register also lists nearby, banded to the same decade, a planting around 1870 and roughly 160 years old.
