Cercis siliquastrum is cauliflorous, so in spring, before a single leaf opens, rosy purple blossom breaks directly from the trunk and the old wood, and the tree looks briefly upholstered rather than in bloom. The name is old and unkind, from the tradition that Judas hanged himself from one, though it may be nothing more than a garbled Judaea. This is a small tree that goes sideways: the one on Placa Joanic in Barcelona is five metres tall under a crown ten metres across. Cordoba's stands at the gate of the San Rafael cemetery and is the largest of its species in the province. Vienna's, in the grounds of the old general hospital, is well over a century old and may be eighteenth century. The fourth is at the Fer a Cheval in Toulouse. Go in spring, before the leaves.
