Ancient trees in the Czech Republic
The thickest protected tree in Prague measures seven and a half metres around, and the story everyone tells about it, that Beethoven sat beneath it, is almost certainly false. This page maps 31 remarkable trees across 3 cities in the Czech Republic, each one researched and verified. The oldest of them is The Cistercian Linden of Zlatá Koruna in Cesky Krumlov, at roughly 700 years.
The city's register says as much rather than repeating it, which sets the tone for the rest. Prague dates its trees in ranges and admits where two records disagree by eighty years, as they do for the ginkgo in Stromovka. The city runs to planes: five of the seventeen mapped here are planes, among them the largest tree on the whole of Petrin hill and one a countess planted in 1813 to dress up her family's riverside garden. The Old Town has exactly one legally protected oak, on a corner nobody photographs, and the tallest single trunk is a 37 metre ash in the one part of Strahov Monastery the monks decided to share. Brno keeps its own list: the Bystrc Lime, past 400 years old, survived a 1933 fire when a neighbour tried to smoke a marten out of its hollow trunk by setting it alight. Cesky Krumlov's oldest tree turns the usual pattern round: it is the free one, a village-square lime older than the paid monastery lindens standing a few hundred metres from it.
