Hungarian Oak
Quercus frainetto is a large-leaved oak native to the Balkans and southeast Europe, reaching parks and streets further north only because someone planted it there on purpose. This page maps every hungarian oak on the site, 3 so far across 3 cities.
Three mapped here carry very different reasons why. Glasgow's grew from a single afternoon in April 1918: days after some British women won the vote, suffrage campaigner Louisa Lumsden planted this oak in Kelvingrove Park on behalf of four rival suffrage groups that agreed, for once, to plant a tree together rather than argue tactics. It is now Scotland's Tree of the Year, still recovering the crown Storm Ophelia tore off in 2017. The Hague's group of three, dated to around 1900, are civic planting from the same continental-collecting era. Warsaw's stands at the corner where Janusz Korczak ran his orphanage until German soldiers marched him and his children to Treblinka in 1942; the tree beside it is named for him.

Not every remarkable tree here began as a sapling nobody thought twice about.
