The oldest and thickest tree in Kaunas inherited the job from one that was burned down.
Ancient trees in Lithuania
Ancient Trees maps 8 places and 28 trees across Lithuania, most of them protected by a single Environment Ministry order rather than a city ordinance: one order, issued on one day in April 2018, designated five trees at once around the small town of Priekulė. This page maps 28 remarkable trees across 8 cities in Lithuania, each one researched and verified. The oldest of them is Peace Hill Oak in Kaunas, at roughly 600 years.
The country's oldest confirmed tree, the Peace Hill Oak above the Kaunas reservoir, carries a name and role handed down from an earlier 800-year-old oak that a 2007 arson attack finally destroyed; Trainiškis does the same for a tree lost to a 2016 storm, mapping the honest young clone planted at its stump rather than pretending it is what it replaced. Braziūkai's Motinėlė, the country's thickest recorded lime trunk, sheltered insurgents against Russian rule in 1863, and Raudonė's seven-trunked lime was voted Lithuania's Tree of the Year in 2018. Lithuania protects its trees by decree; it does not always know how old they are.
