Near Rothenburg, two spruces stand over a small waterfall in the Vorbachtal, registered by Bavaria as one natural monument rather than two, their exact age unrecorded. In Reykjavik, a spruce on the island of Elliðaárhólmi was named Iceland's Tree of the Year in 2019, twelve metres tall and barely older than most of the visitors who come to see it, proof that a country with almost no native forest left can still grow something worth naming.
