Budapest argues about its trees in public and keeps the evidence. This page maps 15 remarkable trees across 3 cities in Hungary, each one researched and verified. The oldest of them is The Old Lime Tree of Felsőmocsolád in Felsőmocsolád, at roughly 400 years.
The Old Acacia of Szechenyi Square is celebrated as 227 years old, planted in 1789, and a historian has taken that number apart using photographs of the square. The Taban Mulberry is credited to Ottoman occupiers by popular legend and, in the better sourced version, to Maria Theresa's eighteenth century push for a domestic silk industry, which put mulberry orchards across the district specifically to feed silkworms. Some dates are firm. Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary, planted the Tree of Science with his own hands in 1823, on what was then his private island. Others come with a warning attached: the Seven Chieftains Plane is not the tree the name first belonged to. Twelve trees, one city so far.
