Downy Oak

Quercus pubescens

Downy oak is the tree dry limestone hillsides are made of, usually a modest, crooked field-edge oak that loses out to better species on good ground, so a big one is worth the detour. We map 12 of them, in 9 cities.

The most famous stands on Orbán Hill above the wine town of Bátaszék in southern Hungary, hollow, 4.7 metres round and put at 300 to 400 years. In 2016 it was voted Europe's Tree of the Year, and every 25 May locals pour wine over its trunk for a good harvest. Umbria grows the species on every slope. Outside Assisi, the oak of Via di Valecchie went onto Italy's national register in July 2026 as the tallest monumental tree in the region, thirty metres up. Near Perugia two grow 150 metres apart within eight centimetres of the same girth, on ground the species shares with truffles.
