Downy Oak
Downy oak is the tree Umbrian hillsides are made of, usually a modest, crooked field-edge tree that loses out to better species on good ground. This page maps every downy oak on the site, 4 so far across 2 cities.
The four the site maps are the exception, all in Umbria and none of them small. Two stand around Assisi: one marking the old gate onto the road to the Eremo delle Carceri, the other in the lower hamlet of Valecchie, added to Italy's national register in July 2026 as the tallest monumental tree recorded in the whole region, thirty metres up. The other two grow 150 metres apart on a lane outside Perugia, within eight centimetres of the same girth, on ground the species shares with truffles: Quercus pubescens is one of central Italy's classic truffle hosts, which is part of why a productive one gets left standing. None of the four carries a documented age; Italy's national register has never recorded one.
Assisi
Italy added this oak to its national register of monumental trees on 24 July 2026, and it went straight in as the tallest tree Umbria has on that list.
Perugia
Downy oak is the tree Umbrian hillsides are made of, and hardly any of them get this big.
The two oaks of Strada del Gioco differ by eight centimetres of girth and one metre of height, and they stand 150 metres apart.
