The tallest tree in Amsterdam stands in a courtyard barely wider than it is tall.
Dutch Elm
Dutch elm disease is named for the country that first identified it, which makes every mapped tree of this hybrid a small act of defiance. This page maps every dutch elm on the site, 8 so far across 6 cities.
Amsterdam's Oudemanhuispoort elm has turned a brick-walled courtyard into an advantage, reaching 35 metres because the only direction open to it was up, and a second Amsterdam elm is the last of roughly thirty planted outside Centraal station in 1889, the rest lost to the epidemic decades ago. The Hague's Malieveld elm dates to the 1830s and has now outlived two separate waves of the disease, the second and worse one arriving in the 1970s. In Portland, the Rockey elm survived a 1963 demolition order only because an architect parked his car where the removal crew needed to stand. Each of these is a tree the fungus could have taken and did not.
Amsterdam
Around thirty elms were planted in front of Amsterdam Centraal after the station opened in 1889.
This elm is alive because somebody injects it, every year.
The Hague
An elm from the 1830s has outlived two epidemics that killed almost everything of its kind.
Alkmaar
Any old elm in the Netherlands is a survivor, and this one has had about a century and a half of chances to die.
Tilburg
The register says two things about this tree and both are worth having.
Hoorn
Dutch elm disease is named after the Dutch scientists who identified the fungus in the 1920s, not after the country's elms, but it took those too.
Portland
A Portland architect once parked his car against this elm so the removal crew could not reach it.
