The Last Elms of Park Baadland

How do I find it? You can recognise them as the only two old elms left in Park Baadland, from an original planting of twenty. They stand somewhere on the small peninsula that shields Hoorn's old harbour; the pin is rough, so look for the pair.
Twenty Dutch elms went into Park Baadland between 1900 and 1910, and two are left standing. Dutch elm disease took the other eighteen in stages: nine still stood in a 2008 survey, and by 2026 the count was down to these two. Baadland is an artificial peninsula, built to shield Hoorn's harbour from the open Zuiderzee before being turned into a public plantsoen between 1837 and 1842, and it has stayed parkland ever since. Herons used to nest in the crowns of its older elms; both the herons and the eighteen other trees that once held them are gone. No source names which two of the original twenty these are or gives either one a girth, so the register's single coordinate for the park is what this page can offer rather than an exact pair of trunks. That is the honest state of a planting that has been dying for over a century and is not finished yet. Free to see, inside the small park, a walk of about a kilometre from Hoorn's town centre.
