In May 2007 this sugar maple's trunk was 47 inches across.
Sugar Maple
Acer saccharum
Sugar maple is the maple of eastern North America and of the Canadian emblem, and the tree behind maple syrup and much of New England's autumn. We map 4 of them, in 3 cities.
Its great specimens are mostly a story of size and survival. In Ontario the Comfort Maple is widely reckoned the oldest of its kind in Canada, put at 400 to 500 years by the Ontario Forestry Association, about six metres round and held up in places by guy wires. Chicago's forest preserves hold two of the species, one 36.6 metres tall in Busse Forest South and a champion in Dam No. 1 Woods East. In Seattle a sugar maple 4.6 metres around stands on a Capitol Hill street, a long way from its native woods.

This sugar maple stands 36.6 metres tall, 120 feet, and the Forest Preserves of Cook County rank it second among all the sugar maples on their land.
The biggest sugar maple on Cook County's forest preserve land is seven metres shorter than the one the county ranks second.

Ontario built a conservation area around one tree, and this is the tree.
