Two of them stand ten metres apart at the edge of this garden and the register protects them as separate trees, which is fair enough: one measures 4.55 metres around the trunk, the other 4.9.
New Zealand's Christmas tree does its flowering here in early summer. This page maps every pohutukawa on the site, 5 so far across 4 cities.
Metrosideros excelsa covers itself in scarlet brushes at the height of the southern summer, which in Cadiz, Lisbon, Porto and Sintra falls half a year off its native schedule and a hemisphere from home. At home it grows on sea cliffs, gripping rock with aerial roots, which is close to what the Atlantic edge of Iberia offers it. The Monserrate tree in Sintra is the oldest of the five, though nobody will pin it closer than somewhere between 175 and 275 years. Porto's pair on the grass at Passeio Alegre stand eleven metres apart and are barely taller than a house. Lisbon's two, in the Jardim da Parada, are ten metres apart and protected as separate trees. Five are mapped, four in Portugal and one in Cadiz.

New Zealand's Christmas tree has adapted well to a country that celebrates the holiday in December for entirely unrelated reasons.
Two of these stand eleven metres apart on the grass at Passeio Alegre, and neither is much taller than a house.
New Zealand's Christmas tree blooms scarlet in Portugal in early summer instead, six months off its native schedule and a hemisphere away from the only place it grows wild.

A tree from the opposite side of the planet turns part of Cadiz crimson every early summer.
