This maple stands in the front garden of a house on the Nieuwemeerdijk built in 1915, and the register cannot quite agree with itself about which of the two is older.
Maple
Acer sp.
These are maples recorded at genus level, either because nobody has settled the species or because the sources disagree. We map 4 of them, in 3 cities.
The best of them are a pair of hananoki, Acer pycnanthum, in two hamlets of Higashiomi in Shiga, 600 metres apart and named National Natural Monuments on the same day in March 1921 as the westernmost wild specimens known. Hananoki means flower tree, and in early spring red flowers crowd the bare twigs before a single leaf opens. The southern one, 5.2 metres round, lost its main trunk in 2010; the northern one has lost two trunks to storms, in 1866 and 1950, and stands on six limbs. In Žilina, the national register calls a street maple a sugar maple and Slovak Wikipedia calls it a silver maple. If you know your maples and walk past, look up and tell us.

Higashiomi
In August 2010 the main trunk of this maple rotted through from the inside, after lightning, and came down.
This maple has lost two trunks to storms and is standing on what was left over.
