In April 2010 the district of Bamberg passed a law about one maple. The ordinance is titled for the Ahorn nördlich von Dörfleins, the maple north of Dörfleins, and it covers a single tree on a single field parcel, number 4050, with a protected zone ten metres around it. The reason it gives is not age. In the official wording, the tree enriches and shapes the look of the village through its beauty and its dominance. That is a planning office saying, as plainly as planning offices ever do, that this is the tree people in Dörfleins see when they look north across the fields. The paperwork stops there. It records no species beyond maple, no girth, no height and no planting date, so we will not call it old and we will not guess at a number. What we can show is that it stands: a photographer recorded it for Wikimedia Commons on 17 February 2024, ten pictures taken within about fifteen metres of the trunk. Dörfleins is part of Hallstadt, about seven kilometres north of Bamberg's centre. A protected oak stands about 700 metres away in the same village. No source we found says whether a footpath reaches the maple itself; the 2024 photographs were taken from the field edge, and that is where to stand. Sycamore, Norway maple or field maple: the register does not say which, and nobody has dated it. If you know either answer, tell us.
