Boston has a pair the Globe calls the oldest English elms in the Western Hemisphere, planted somewhere between 1772 and 1812, and Saint-Gaudens built his memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th around them, on a vault designed to spare their roots. New York's is the Hangman's Elm on Washington Square, more than 300 years old and possibly 346, with a nickname that no court or newspaper record supports. Portland's was the only elm left standing on the north side of its block after the Columbus Day Storm of 1962 gusted to 116 miles an hour and flattened around 15 billion board feet of Pacific Northwest timber. All three came through a century in which most of their species did not.
