Ancient trees in Romania
Romania's best-known tree stands in front of a village church. This page maps 8 remarkable trees across 5 cities in Romania, each one researched and verified. The oldest of them is The Oak from Cajvana in Cajvana, at roughly 810 years.
In 2011 the lime of Leliceni, in the Szekler hills of Transylvania, won European Tree of the Year with 23,298 votes, after winning the national contest first. It has company in the north, where the town of Cajvana keeps a live camera on its oak, reckoned at roughly 810 years, and in the Cibin gorge near Sibiu, where a silver fir called the Guardian of Cibin rises about 42 metres. Bucharest adds a different kind of tree: a mulberry with a legend on a plaque in its church porch, a plane in Cișmigiu whose roots were cut by a lighting trench in 2018, a Turkish hazel that is one of only two officially protected in the country, and four ginkgos in the Botanical Garden. Five places mapped so far, eight trees, from mountain fir to city park.
