Ancient trees in Latvia
Latvia's old trees are mostly oaks and limes, and several are hollow. This page maps 8 remarkable trees across 4 cities in Latvia, each one researched and verified. The oldest of them is The Sēja Oak (Sējas ozols) in Sēja, at roughly 500 years.
The Elku linden in Valdemārpils is the thickest lime in the Baltic states, and visitors read owls, hedgehogs, turtles and snakes in the shapes inside its trunk. The Kaņepju Oak at Jērcēni, split by lightning, is said to hold eight people. The Sēja Oak carries a story of chieftains meeting beneath it that at least one Latvian source calls a recent invention; the tree, roughly 500 years old, needs no such claim. Riga is the easiest place to go on foot, and its trees carry the city's own record-keeping: a linden with a rowan growing from its fork, an oak patched for decades with metal plates, and a maple that went from four metres round in 1975 to 5.34 by 2009. Three places mapped so far, eight trees, most of them oaks and limes with damage they have outlived.
