Ancient trees in Ireland
Ireland's oldest trees are yews on old church ground, and nearly everything else worth the walk was shipped in by Victorians. This page maps 31 remarkable trees across 3 cities in Ireland, each one researched and verified. The oldest of them is The Witch's Yew in Cork, at more than 600 years.
Cork's Witch's Yew is put at more than 600 years and was voted the country's Tree of the Year in 2019, then backed by 11,372 people across Europe for the continental title; Dublin's Dean's Tree matches it for age. The rest of Dublin reads as a nineteenth century plant collection: Glasnevin's Atlas cedar, dawn redwood and Caucasian elm, the last of which a nurseryman propagated into a cultivar sold under the garden's own name, and a giant sequoia Queen Victoria planted on what is now presidential ground in 1861. Trinity College has the one nobody forgets, a plane slowly swallowing a cast iron bench. Two cities so far, 30 trees.
