The oldest tree we map in Hawaii is The Haili Street Kamani in Hilo, at about 206 years. We map 43 trees across 5 places in Hawaii, each one researched and verified.
Almost nothing that makes Hawaii's streets shady grew here two centuries ago. The banyans came from India, the rain trees from South America, the baobabs from Africa, and most of them were planted by somebody whose name is still on a plaque: a sheriff in Lahaina in 1873, a German physician who lived on the Foster Garden ground before it was a garden. So the old trees here are a history of arrivals, and the counties protect them one by one as Exceptional Trees. The Lahaina banyan stood through the fire of August 2023 that burned the courthouse beside it. On Oahu a single rain tree appears on Japanese television most weeks, and almost nobody watching knows it grows in Honolulu. On the slopes above Hilo, Kalopa keeps a patch of the native ohi'a and koa forest that the rest of the island lost.
