There is a baobab in Singapore, and it is only about forty years old.
Baobab
Adansonia digitata belongs to the dry savannah of Africa, where it stores water in a swollen trunk and can live a thousand years. This page maps every baobab on the site, 5 so far across 4 cities.
Nothing here is that old; what the three mapped specimens share is how fast the trunk gets there. Honolulu's Foster Garden tree, nicknamed the Dead Rat Tree for its grey, furred seed pods, reached a girth close to thirteen metres in around ninety years. Singapore's, near Melati Gate, was already five metres round when it was endorsed as a heritage tree in 2016 at just thirty. The third, on the University of Hawaii's Manoa campus, is loved enough that when Gilmore Hall was demolished in 1973 the university built its replacement Art Building around the baobab rather than move it; the university calls it the largest baobab in the United States. None has been in the ground a century, and all three already look ancient.
