Georgia's oldest trees are live oaks, and the towns around them have bent to fit. In Brunswick the street was laid out around Lover's Oak rather than through it, and the tree is thought to be about nine hundred years old. In Savannah the Candler Oak became the first single tree in the United States to be given its own conservation easement, after years of cars parking on its roots. The avenue of oaks at Wormsloe is younger than it looks, planted in the 1890s, and it is still the most photographed thing on the estate. In Athens a white oak stands on a small plot that, by local legend, the tree was deeded in its own name. The tree standing there now is its son.
