Eucalyptus globulus comes from Tasmania and southeastern Australia and puts on size faster than almost anything else that grows this big, which is why nineteenth century Europe planted it everywhere: for timber, for drying out marshland, and on the belief that its oils cleaned bad air. The tree on the hotel road at Bucaco is 7.15 metres around at about 150 years old, thicker than anything else on that walk, and Guimaraes has one of 7.05 metres on Monte da Penha. Naples' reaches 30 metres, the tallest tree the registers record inside the botanical garden. Madrid's stands north of the Estanque in the Retiro and is over a century old. Every one of them is younger than it looks.
