A pecan is an odd thing to find towering over a European garden, and yet two of the tallest trees mapped here are exactly that: 38 metres in Bordeaux's Jardin Public, 37 in the Real Alcazar of Seville, both outgrowing every native Mediterranean species planted around them. The species belongs to the river bottoms of Texas and the lower Mississippi, and Dallas keeps two working examples of that native range: a pecan that stood watching the Trinity River crossing before the first bridge went up in 1855, and a disputed elder in Moore Park whose 472 centimetres of girth make it the thickest tree of its kind the city has measured. Planted for nuts as often as for looks, and left standing long after anyone was counting the harvest, a mapped pecan tends to be the tallest thing nobody expected in the garden.
