The Spruce of Elliðaárhólmi
~55-65 years (undocumented exact date)Norway Sprucepin approximate
The Norway spruce named Iceland's Tree of the Year in 2019 is not old by the standards of almost anywhere else on this site, an estimated 50 to 60 years at the time of its selection, but it stands on ground that had no trees at all a human lifetime earlier. Elliðaárhólmi, an island within the Elliðaárdalur river valley on Reykjavik's eastern edge, only began receiving planted forest around 1950, when staff from the city's hydroelectric power company started work later taken over by the Reykjavik Forestry Society in 1972. Norway spruce imported from northern Norway went in heavily through the 1950s, 60s and 70s, part of a national effort to prove that organized forestry could work at all in a country that had lost nearly all its original woodland centuries earlier to settlement-era clearing and grazing. This particular tree, twelve metres tall by the time it won its designation, has become something like a mascot for that project, not ancient, not native, but proof that a spruce planted with real effort in the right spot can grow into something worth naming, in a country where almost no tree could make that claim a century ago.
