Crows Ash / Australian Teak

Flindersia australis

Flindersia australis is a Queensland rainforest hardwood, milled and sold commercially as Australian teak, named for the navigator Matthew Flinders. We map 3 of them, in 1 city.

The Brisbane trees carry an honesty gap rather than a measured age. The oldest by claim stands in Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, planted in 1884 to replace an older crows ash felled in 1826 to clear the ground for the settlement's first government garden, no relation between the two. A second, in Newstead Park, is dated only by inference: a television gardening segment judged it older than the 1846 house it stands beside and called that over 160 years, a floor rather than a figure. The third lives worse than either, a memorial tree planted in Toowong in September 1924 inside a sandstone planter box, stunted by its own container ever since, dedicated to a town council abolished thirteen months after the planting.
