Vienna protected this lime for owning a street corner. The monument list says Natural Monument 813 dominates the crossing of Rielgasse and Kaserngasse in Mauer, and that is the job it still does from the corner of the Maurer Schubertpark. The measurements are those of a broad, low tree rather than a tall one. At designation the trunk was 3.20 metres round at one metre up, the crown about 18 metres across and the height about 16 metres, so the crown is wider than the tree is high. The city's tree cadastre, which records it at exactly the register point, gives 3.04 metres and an 11 to 15 metre height class. The gap between the two girths is most likely a different measuring height or date, not a shrinking tree. Mauer was a wine village on the southern edge of Vienna until it joined the city in 1938, and small-leaved limes like this one are the classic village tree of Central Europe, planted at crossings, churches and greens. Nobody has published a planting date for this one, so we give no age. If you know it, tell us. Go at the end of June or in early July. Small-leaved limes flower then, and a crown this size fills the corner with the scent and the hum of bees.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.
