Acer saccharinum comes from the flooded river bottoms of eastern North America, where it is built to take a spring deluge that would kill less flexible trees. In Den Bosch it stands with a plane and a lime on a surviving 17th-century bastion, and separately along the old inner-city water at roughly 110 years and 25 metres. In Madrid's walled Cecilio Rodriguez garden one gave up on a single trunk early and grew four. Poznan made its finest specimen, a 105-year-old on Zakrzewski, an official natural monument. Three cities, three very different reasons the tree was allowed to keep going.
