Sago Palm

Cycas revoluta belongs to the cycads, a lineage that predates flowering plants, largely unchanged since before the dinosaurs, and it grows to match: sometimes a centimetre or two of height a year. That patience is why the three specimens mapped here, each 5.5 to 5.9 metres tall, still count as remarkable. One, beside a museum in Kagoshima, carries the name of a discovery rather than an age: in 1896 a botanist found this species' sperm cells swimming inside an ovule, the first time motile sperm had ever been seen in a seed plant. Another, a clump of roughly ninety stems at a Shizuoka temple, is one of Japan's Three Great Cycads and, by legend, close to a thousand years old. The third stands in Seville's Alcázar gardens, native to Japan, toxic throughout, rated in perfect health at its last survey.
