The Beech of Landgoed Wageler

This beech was on the estate before the estate was designed. 't Wageler is the ground that Wattez planted for the Van Heeks in the 1860s and that partly became the Ledeboerpark. The register bands this tree 1830 to 1840, thirty years earlier, which means it was a mature tree of some size when the landscape architect arrived with his plans and his invoices. That is the ordinary way a Dutch estate garden was actually made. You did not clear ground and start over. You looked at what was standing, kept whatever was good, and arranged the new planting to make the most of it, which is why the oldest tree in a nineteenth century park is so often older than the park. It stands along the Es, the old open arable field that these Twente farms were organised around. An es is a very specific thing here: a slightly raised field built up over centuries by carting in sods and manure, so the soil under it can be a metre deeper than the heath beside it. Good ground, and part of why a beech here grew as it did. Smooth grey bark, deep shade, bare litter beneath.
