What is the oldest tree in Cesky Krumlov?
The oldest tree mapped here is the Cistercian Linden of Zlata Koruna, a large-leaved lime on the village square about 150 metres from Zlata Koruna monastery's gate, assessed at roughly 600 to 800 years old from measurements taken in the 1990s. It also happens to be the free one: the monastery's own trees nearby, including a taller, better-known lime in its courtyard, all sit behind the paid tour route.
Zlata Koruna, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1263 by King Premysl Otakar II, about eight kilometres from Cesky Krumlov's old town, holds four of this page's six trees, three of them inside its paid grounds, now run as a state heritage site with its own admission and opening hours, closed Mondays. The exception is the oldest: a village-square lime whose lower trunk was packed with stone in the 19th century and whose upper trunk is still bound with metal bands, standing on open ground the monastery's ticket never touches. The Czech national register of memorial trees (pamatne stromy) gives species and girth for every tree here but no age field at all, so ages come from a mix of designation-era assessments, a documented abbot's tenure, and honest gaps where nothing survives. The other two trees, a bridge oak and a roadside lime, stand in separate hamlets in the opposite direction from Zlata Koruna and are best treated as their own short trips rather than part of one walk.
