Vienna protected this plane in 1969 for a reason few trees are given: it shapes the look of its street. That is the city's own wording for Natural Monument 473, listed on 18 March 1969 on Traklgasse in Grinzing, in front of numbers 11 and 13. It was then about 18 metres tall. The city's tree inventory now puts it in the 21 to 25 metre height class, with a trunk 3.25 metres round and a crown 10 to 12 metres across. On a quiet residential street, that trunk is hard to miss. The other street trees on this stretch are lindens between 0.86 and 1.57 metres round, so the plane carries roughly twice the girth of the biggest of them. It is not the only protected plane here. About 40 metres away, at Traklgasse 9, stands Natural Monument 560, a second plane, listed in 1973 with a trunk then 2.23 metres round. The two make one short stop. One loose end in the paperwork: the published list of Döbling's monuments also names a Lombardy poplar under number 473. The city's register point holds a single tree, and it is this plane. The newest photographs we know of date from July 2012, though the inventory still carries the tree. Nobody has dated it either. If you walk past, tell us how it looks, and if you know when it was planted, tell us that too.
The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.
