What is the oldest tree in Veľké Borové?
Veľké Borové's oldest mapped tree is a wild Scots pine on the hillside above the village, Slovakia's first-ever Tree of the Year in 2004, estimated at 250 to 350 years old with a girth of 460 centimetres.
The pine grows wild on a forested slope above Veľké Borové, at the foot of Súšava hill, and won Slovakia's inaugural Strom roka title in 2004 ahead of every other nominated tree in the country. Foresters recorded it at 23 metres tall and 460 centimetres round, and estimated its age at 250 to 350 years. An information plaque was installed after the win, and for a decade a geocache route guided hikers up the hillside path to find it. That geocache was archived in 2014 over deteriorated trail conditions, but no dated photograph or report has surfaced since confirming the pine is still standing, so this page states that gap honestly. The pin marks the hillside area rather than a precise spot, since the coordinates come from a photograph's location tag rather than a source naming the exact trunk. A second, unrelated tree stands about 15 kilometres away above the village of Žiar: a wild apple on open hillside farmland that nobody planted, which took second place in the 2026 European Tree of the Year, Slovakia's best-ever result. It is a separate car trip, not a joint walk with the pine.
