The calendar disagrees. Amalia laid the garden out between 1838 and 1840 and left Greece for good in 1862, and Washingtonia filifera did not reach European cultivation until seed arrived at a Belgian nursery around 1876, three years before the genus was even named. The row went in later, and her name attached itself the way a founder's name does. None of that makes the palms less worth the walk. Nice's stand at the corners of three formal flowerbeds at the Villa Masséna, designed by Édouard André and opened to the public in 1921 on a condition attached to the bequest. Barcelona's four have been in the courtyard of a former orphanage since about 1904. The species itself comes from desert oases in the American Southwest and northern Mexico.
