American Sycamore

Platanus occidentalis is the sycamore of the eastern United States and the American parent of the London plane, the hybrid that lines half the streets in Europe, so a full grown specimen standing in its own right is unusual here. Ljubljana has two, and they are the last of an avenue that ran from the foot of the castle out toward the Dolenjska road, drawn on a map of the city in 1744 and gone everywhere else since. Both are individually listed as natural values of national importance, which almost nothing in the historic centre is. The thicker one is 596 centimetres round and 33 metres tall. Como's is the same height and the tallest tree on the lakefront walk, with no age, no planting date and no record of who put it there.
