The Corner Plane of Streliska and Strossmayerjeva

How do I find it? You can recognise it by where it stands, right on the corner where Streliska meets Strossmayerjeva. It is the slimmer of the avenue's last two planes and it carries no plaque.

A short walk from its twin on Streliska ulica stands the second survivor of Ljubljana's vanished plane-tree avenue, rooted exactly at the corner where Streliska meets Strossmayerjeva. The two trees are the only physical evidence left of a double row that once ran the length of the street, visible on the city's 1744 map and gone everywhere else since. This one carries its own separate listing in both of Slovenia's national heritage registers, the Register of Natural Values and the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage, protected not for any single record-breaking measurement but for being one half of a pair whose surviving presence is the whole point: two trees, planted together, are what is left of a street plan otherwise erased. The streets around it have been repaved and renamed since the avenue first went in, most recently Strossmayerjeva itself, renovated in recent years without disturbing the tree on the corner. It has no plaque and needs none. It is simply still there, half of the last two.
