The Beech of Sint-Lambertuskerk

This beech grows in the churchyard of Sint-Lambertuskerk in Haren, another of the small villages gathered into the municipality of Oss, banded by the national register to a planting around 1890, roughly 140 years old. A churchyard beech of this age has usually had an easier life than a street tree of the same vintage: less pruning, less soil compaction, and the kind of undisturbed ground that lets a beech build the wide, low, dome-shaped crown the species is known for when nothing crowds it. A beech that old also carries the smooth grey bark the species keeps its whole life, unlike most other large trees, which is part of why old beeches so often bear generations of carved initials that never grow over or fade. The register describes the site, a working cemetery still in use, but nothing about the tree's own history beyond species and decade. Churchyards are consistently where this project finds its oldest small-village trees, for the plain reason that nobody redevelops a cemetery. If you know more about this one, tell us.
