What is the oldest tree in Bratislava?

Bratislava's most precisely dated protected tree is the Sophora of Vajanského Embankment, a Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum) in a small riverside park a few minutes from Hviezdoslav Square. Slovakia's state register and an independent Slovak protected-trees resource agree it was roughly eighty years old when it was formally protected in 1996, which puts its planting near 1916 and its age today at roughly a hundred and ten. An Adriatic oak on the Šulekova stairway carries a similar derived age from a similar dated figure, so the two are close rather than one being clearly oldest, but the pagoda tree gets the answer here for its fuller two-source documentation. A paulownia elsewhere on this page has a disputed age that could put it older still, anywhere from sixty to a hundred and fifty years depending on which source is right, which is exactly why this page states the range rather than picking a winner.

This page is built on Slovakia's own state register of protected trees (Štátna ochrana prírody SR, released under CC BY 4.0), cross-checked against krizom-krazom.eu, an independent Slovak resource that documents the country's protected trees district by district, and against local news coverage where it exists. The register gives species, measurements and a protection year for each tree, and for several the age is recorded as of that protection year rather than continuously updated since, which is why every age on this page is stated as a derived, 2026-adjusted estimate rather than a fresh measurement. Five of the six published here cluster within 1.7 kilometres, from the Danube embankment up the slope toward Bratislava Castle, genuinely walkable in one outing; the sixth, the plane at Zelezna studnicka, is a separate trip out to the forest park. Several more register entries were found sitting in private gardens ('v záhrade' in the register's own text) with no evidence of public access and are held back as leads rather than published; one, a wild service tree at Devín, is confirmed dead by a 2020 local news report the register itself had not caught up with.
