Ciechomski's Pear

A pear tree is a strange choice for a memorial, which is exactly why this one has stayed interesting long after the man it supposedly honours. Walenty Ciechomski was the last soltys, the village administrator, of Mokotow before the settlement was absorbed into Warsaw, and a veteran of the failed 1863 uprising against Russian rule; his gravestone at Sluzew cemetery still identifies him by that title alone. Local tradition holds that the pear was planted in 1870 to mark his settling on this corner, and the story has been repeated long enough to earn the tree informal protected status under his name. Historians examining the claim more recently have pushed back on most of it: a pear is an unusual and impractical species to plant as a personal memorial, the tree's apparent age does not obviously match an 1870 planting, and the likelier explanation is that it simply seeded itself on the corner sometime later, with Ciechomski's name attached to it afterward rather than at the root. Nobody disputes that Ciechomski himself was real, or that he fought in an uprising that cost Poland dearly and gained it nothing immediate. What is genuinely uncertain is whether this particular tree has anything to do with him at all, and this entry says so rather than repeating the tidier version of the story.
